Tabuaço is a Portuguese village located in the Douro sub-region, belonging to the North region and the district of Viseu. It has an urban area of 11.16 km2, 1,535 inhabitants in 2021 and a population density of 138 inhabitants per km2.

It is the seat of the municipality of Tabuaço, with a total area of 133.86 km2, 5,034 inhabitants in 2021 and a population density of 38 inhabitants per km2, subdivided into 14 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Sabrosa, to the east by São João da Pesqueira, to the southeast by Sernancelhe, to the southwest by Moimenta da Beira and to the west by Armamar.

Around 25% of the population works in the tertiary sector, but agriculture continues to be the sector with the greatest weight, around 56% of the active population. Among the products of greater economic importance, wine and handicrafts stand out.

The roots of the village of Tabuaço date back to times older than the Portuguese nationality itself. During Prehistory, several people settled here and developed their activity, visible both in the ruins of shelters and castros, and in traces of work instruments, such as ceramic pieces or primitive oil and wine presses. .

Architectural and Historical Heritage
Throughout the county, there are very rich archaeological remains. The fortified towns of Longa, Sabroso, Quinta dos Pinheiros, Senhora do Calfão, and São Mamede can be confirmed by the ruins that have survived over time. In Porqueira and Cabeço de São João, there are prehistoric shelters and, in São Domingos, there is a dolmen. From Prehistory, we still have the rock sanctuary of Cabeço das Pombas, the cave paintings of Lugar do Calvário, the zoomorphic figure of Pedra do Cavalo, in Paradela, or the statue-menhir of Alto da Escrita, discovered in Vale de Figueira and which is now the main piece of the permanent exhibition of county archeology on display at the Municipal Tourism Gallery of Tabuaço. We must not forget the recently discovered Menhir da Chã, in Longa, or a granite head of a warrior, in Vale de Figueira.

From the period of Roman occupation, there are also many remains, such as the altar of São João, the Roman road from Vale de Vila / Sendim, among others that cross, now only in small sections, the county. Also noteworthy are the necropolises of Passo Frio and Sendim, the sanctuary of Santa Maria do Sabroso and São Pedro das Águias and the sarcophagi of S. Pedro das Águias, Arcos and Seara. Interestingly, there are wine and oil presses, excavated in the rock, in Arcos, in Eira do Monte, in Fontelo, in Quinta de S. Martinho and in many other places in the county.

In architectural terms, time has preserved many fascinating and valuable monuments. The churches, many, with Romanesque origins for the most part, are rich. As examples, we have the Romanesque churches of S. Pedro das Águias, Barcos and Nossa Senhora do Sabroso. There are many important pillories such as Arcos, Granja do Tedo, Sendim or Valença do Douro. The Roman and Romanesque bridges were, for the most part, destroyed, but some examples can still be seen, in the meantime rebuilt, in Granja do Tedo, Távora and Santa Leocádia. There are many manor houses, with coats of arms, from the majestic and richly decorated manor house to the simple palace, sober but haughty.

Tabuaço also has a rich natural heritage. Unique landscape, strong in its contrasts between the mountains and the valley, between the green and yellow tones of the vineyard and the blue of the water and sky, the slopes of vineyards and terraces as far as the eye can see or the almond trees in bloom, in the beginning of spring, greet and delight locals and visitors alike.
