40° 52′ 13″ N; 7° 34′ 31″ W

The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, also referred to as the Residence of the Company of Jesus, is located in the parish of Quintela, Sernancelhe municipality, in Portugal, where the original image of Nossa Senhora da Lapa can be found.

History
The original chapel was built in 1498. The current church was built in the 17th century by the Jesuits, who greatly promoted pilgrimages.
The altar of Nossa Senhora da Lapa was erected in the place where, according to legend, the shepherdess Joana found the image hidden by the nuns.
The Sanctuary keeps in the chancel the miraculous rock (lapa) with the image of Senhora da Lapa.
Worthy of note are the countless treasures offered, even by kings and queens, and the scenography of the altars of the Crucifixion and Death of Saint Joseph.
This sanctuary of Senhora da Lapa and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, were once the two most important sanctuaries in the Iberian Peninsula.
It is on the 15th of August of each year that the feast of Senhora da Lapa is celebrated, attracting thousands of pilgrims in fulfillment of promises or simple devotion.

Still in Beira Alta and about 15 km away, is the Senhor dos Caminhos Sanctuary which, after Senhora da Lapa, is one of the largest pilgrimage centers in the region. Its festivity is celebrated on a movable date, on the Sunday of the Most Holy Trinity.
