CASA DO CABO

Palace with a Joanine Coat of Arms, post-Pombaline ( 18th century ), which is one of the examples of the most beautiful built heritage in the region, was designed by Nicolau Nasoni.
Countryside manor whose scenographic façade, divided into 3 bodies by pilasters, develops horizontally, following Nasoni's architectural typology. The windows feature profusely carved lintels with rocaille motifs. In the central body, flanked by pilasters topped by fireworks, the cut-out balcony resting on prismatic pillars stands out, where a doorway with worked frames opens. To top it off, the Johannine coat of arms on a monumental circular gable. It is worth visiting the interior of this palace.

The Igreja Matriz de São João da Pesqueira continues to preserve some medieval features, especially in the main portal with an ogival arch. Inside this temple, whose construction must date back to the 14th century, the baroque main altarpiece and the 17th-century paneled covering of the nave's ceiling stand out.

WINE MUSEUM

The Wine Museum of S. João da Pesqueira, whose theme focuses on wine and the vineyard, emphasizes the products and activities of the Douro region.

Its implantation in the municipality and town of S. João da Pesqueira, is the result of its centrality in the Douro Demarcated Region and its strong contribution to wine production, being the municipality the largest producer in the region and the one with the largest area classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

This majestic Museum, in addition to a permanent exhibition linked to the theme of wine, includes a tasting room, a wine shop, a wine-bar and other exhibition and cultural spaces, fulfilling the purpose of the “territory museum”, being by that reason a knot in the network that is being woven by the Douro Museum.

SÃO SALVADOR DO MUNDO
 (VIEWPOINT)

The São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint is located on the left bank of the Douro River in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region, next to the road that connects São João da Pesqueira to the Valeira Dam. The site consists of an imposing granitic cone with an altitude of 493 meters and with a steep slope towards the river. From this viewpoint the main panoramic sight is of the Douro River´s Valley and its tributaries, creating a landscape of great beauty, complemented by the huge rugged and robust slopes that contrast with the vineyards, olive trees and orchards. In the background there is a glimpse of the Valeira Dam and the historic Cachão da Valeira, famous for being the place where Baron of Forrester died.
The view from this point is magnificent, allowing a unique and intense perspective on the Douro River, the Valeira Dam and the surrounding landscape.

RIODADES

41° 01' 18" N ; 7° 29' 56" W

Riodades is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, with an area of 19.20 km² and 462 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 24.1 inhabitants/km².
The origins of this population are remote, they go beyond the founding of the nationality itself. Many people would have passed through there, always leaving the mark of their passage, either in physical traces of architectural works, or in their own and characteristic words, or even in cultural aspects that have resisted the passage of time, constituting a powerful heritage of who receives them.

To speak of the history of Riodades is to speak of a history traversed step by step with Paredes da Beira, the neighboring town of Riodades, always linked to it with cultural, life, or even blood ties, since the very genesis of the two populations. It has always been like this and it is expected that it will always be like this, due to the close connection that exists between the inhabitants of the two localities. This fact does not mean that their relationship over time has always been cordial and peaceful. Since the most remote times, both disputed primacy over the other, provoking those very characteristic animosities between neighboring towns but which, deep down, always served to keep alive the spirit of union that characterizes them.

Geography and morphology
Parish of the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, district of Viseu, 22 km southwest of the county seat.

Compact parish, located in a pleasant and sunny location, with wide and expansive views, in an area of Beira characterized by huge granite outcrops, which provide an interesting landscape from a geological point of view.

Once densely populated by pine trees, it is today one of the areas most martyred by the forest fires that year after year proliferate through the Portuguese woods and forests. Extremely rich and widely known for its valleys of vineyards and olive groves, mainly for its unique quality, we are faced today, in many cases, with an arid and little cultivated vision resulting from the constant abandonment of agriculture and/or the desertification of the Portuguese interior, which really feels in localities without any type of industry or services.

Much can be said about Riodades, as its history is rich and extensive. Founded before the Portuguese monarchy, it was rescued from the Moors by D. Thedon and D. Rauzendo, in the mid-11th century.

Patrimony
Castelo Velho – to the west, close to Távora;
Castelo (Castle) Chen de Murganho – at the site of Carvas;
Castelo de Nossa Senhora – this, the main one, its former name was Castelo da Fraga da Alcávia.

About 7 km west of São João da Pesqueira, Ervedosa do Douro is the largest producer of fortified wine in the Douro Demarcated Region and the parish with the largest area in the World Heritage spot.

Monuments
The Church of S. Vicente, rebuilt in 1841, features a magnificent baroque gilded carved throne. In the baptistery you can see old images of S. Miguel and S. Sebastião, pre - national cults.

Casa do Cão, an emblazoned house, is a building that stands out from the civil architecture with some apparatus and has stones from the Saavedras coat of arms. From the zoomorphic insignia that appears on the crest, over the coat of arms, came the name with which the people baptized it.

São Xisto, in São João da Pesqueira, right in the heart of the Douro Wine Region, is one of our favorite villages in the region. Despite being small, mostly dedicated to tourism and easily visited in 1 to 2 hours, this village wins over for the scenery it offers and the calm it offers.

The predominance of schist is visible right at the entrance to the village, where there is a plaque with its name. From here, the road continues for a few more metres, through twists and turns, to the entrance to the village, where there is an atrium where you can leave your cars. Although there are other parking lots inside the village, we recommend leaving your car here and walking.
