RIODADES (SÃO JOÃO DA PESQUEIRA)

RIODADES

41° 01' 18" N ; 7° 29' 56" W

Riodades is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, with an area of 19.20 km² and 462 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 24.1 inhabitants/km².
The origins of this population are remote, they go beyond the founding of the nationality itself. Many people would have passed through there, always leaving the mark of their passage, either in physical traces of architectural works, or in their own and characteristic words, or even in cultural aspects that have resisted the passage of time, constituting a powerful heritage of who receives them.

To speak of the history of Riodades is to speak of a history traversed step by step with Paredes da Beira, the neighboring town of Riodades, always linked to it with cultural, life, or even blood ties, since the very genesis of the two populations. It has always been like this and it is expected that it will always be like this, due to the close connection that exists between the inhabitants of the two localities. This fact does not mean that their relationship over time has always been cordial and peaceful. Since the most remote times, both disputed primacy over the other, provoking those very characteristic animosities between neighboring towns but which, deep down, always served to keep alive the spirit of union that characterizes them.

Geography and morphology
Parish of the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, district of Viseu, 22 km southwest of the county seat.

Compact parish, located in a pleasant and sunny location, with wide and expansive views, in an area of Beira characterized by huge granite outcrops, which provide an interesting landscape from a geological point of view.

Once densely populated by pine trees, it is today one of the areas most martyred by the forest fires that year after year proliferate through the Portuguese woods and forests. Extremely rich and widely known for its valleys of vineyards and olive groves, mainly for its unique quality, we are faced today, in many cases, with an arid and little cultivated vision resulting from the constant abandonment of agriculture and/or the desertification of the Portuguese interior, which really feels in localities without any type of industry or services.

Much can be said about Riodades, as its history is rich and extensive. Founded before the Portuguese monarchy, it was rescued from the Moors by D. Thedon and D. Rauzendo, in the mid-11th century.
