It is the seat of a municipality with 133.72 km² in an area and 2 952 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 7 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north and northwest by the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, to the east by Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Mêda, to the south by Trancoso (the exclave of Guilheiro), and to the west by Sernancelhe.
Rising at more than 900 meters in altitude, the pentagonal medieval Penedono Castle dates from around 900.
The village of Penedono was the birthplace of Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, the famous Magriço, immortalized by Luís de Camões in the epic poem "Os Lusíadas".
The icicle, freezing water droplets on the roofs of the houses, is typical of a region used to frost and dew during the harsh winter.
This is a municipality that essentially lives on the chestnut, its biggest annual harvest, exported to the United States of America, among other markets.
