CARREGAL DO SAL

Carregal do Sal is a Portuguese village in the district of Viseu, located in the province of Beira Alta, in the Center region (Region of Beiras) and sub-region Viseu Dão-Lafões, with about 5 500 inhabitants.
It is the seat of the municipality of Carregal do Sal with an area of 116.89 km² and 9,038 inhabitants (2021), subdivided into 5 parishes. The municipality is limited to the northeast by the municipality of Nelas, to the southeast by Oliveira do Hospital and Tábua, to the west by Santa Comba Dão, to the northwest by Tondela and to the north by Viseu.
History
Carregal was the name of an old place in the municipality of Currelos. It became known as “Salt” as a result of the large salt pans that Francisco Lucas de Melo Pais do Amaral, from Casa de Santar, ordered to build there.
Taking advantage of the situation of the place next to the road that was then the main communication route between the districts of Viseu and Coimbra, Francisco Lucas de Melo Pais do Amaral had large salt pans installed on land that he had inherited, which supplied the entire region. This business, which remained the property of his descendants for almost 200 years, consisted of ordering salt from Figueira da Foz, in boats, along the Mondego and Dão rivers, to Carregal, where it was stored in large deposits, in the place that this was called Salinas, on the outskirts of the village, where Francisco Lucas de Melo Pais do Amaral had, by the way, built the house of the same name, today the Municipal Museum Manuel Soares de Albergaria.
